Bringing the beach home

Getting back into work in the new year is a struggle. Going from slow days and free schedules into the standard structured day isn’t all that fun. What if, though, you could come home to a home that harnessed that holiday feeling of easy breeziness.

I’ve been thinking lately about how to bring that beach the beach to my home, and not in the literal way that always happens, being buckets of sand being tracked back in shoes and clothing and bags and seemingly everything that went within inches of the dunes. Rather, in a way that captures that feeling of lightness you get from seaside escapes.

There’s something special about a beautiful beach house, be it the clean lines, natural textures, or that feeling of sanctuary they invoke. Here are a few ideas on how to harness the look, no matter how suburban your abode.

Colours: Look to bright whites and dreamy turquoise to provide the perfect palette to layer with neutral furniture and accessories and create your urban beach abode.

A neutral, woven rug: A textured woven rug in neutral tones will provide the a lightening lift to your room. Kmart’s round jute rugs come in two sizes and are an affordable option.

Beach-themed accessories: This is the obvious finishing touch that will bring the beach to your home – add shells and coral into your decor, or even go literal with Bed Bath & Table’s Beach wall plaque… (main image, $14.95). You could even hang your straw or beach bag on a hook by the door to give the feeling you’re ready to pick up and head seaside at any moment.

Frame your holiday snaps: Keep your beach getaway top of mind by framing your holiday snaps and placing them prominently in the home. Visit Total Picture Framing Co. to talk through the options to present your photos and prints beautifully.
